EPDM Roofing FAQs.
A properly installed EPDM roof typically lasts 25-30 years, with some installations exceeding 40 years. The key factors are quality installation, proper drainage, and regular maintenance. Our ROOFSHIELD+ maintenance program helps maximize your EPDM roof's lifespan.
Yes, EPDM is generally 10-20% less expensive than TPO for both materials and installation. The lower cost is due to simpler installation methods (adhesive or ballasted vs. heat-welded) and lower material costs. For budget-conscious projects, EPDM offers excellent value.
Black EPDM is the traditional option with excellent UV resistance and lower cost. White EPDM provides similar performance to black but with a reflective surface that reduces cooling costs—though not as effectively as TPO. White EPDM costs slightly more but may qualify for energy incentives.
Yes, one of EPDM's advantages is easy repair. Small punctures and tears can be patched with EPDM patches and adhesive—often a same-day repair. Seam failures can be resealed. These repairs are typically less expensive than TPO or PVC repairs because they don't require heat welding equipment.
EPDM can be installed three ways: Fully adhered (glued to insulation/deck) provides the best wind resistance. Mechanically attached (fastened with plates) is cost-effective for large areas. Ballasted (held down with river rock) is the most economical but adds roof load. We'll recommend the best method for your building.
Excellent. EPDM remains flexible down to -40°F, making it ideal for Ohio's cold winters. The rubber composition doesn't become brittle in cold weather like some materials, allowing it to expand and contract without cracking. This makes EPDM particularly popular in northern states.
